Program News - Spring 2008 : Spring has finally sprung, and the EE program is in full swing! We are currently working in 11 public schools in Seattle. EE staff working with Madrona's 6th grade recently organized a field trip to the Seattle Aquarium where students participated in interactive educational activities. At Sanislo Elementary, new interpretive signs have been installed at the school's wetland for the school community to learn from and enjoy. Habitat restoration has continued at Cooper Elementary and the New School, with students working with Council staff in Seattle Parks.

Earth Day Festival 2008!: The Earth Day Festival was a great success! Thanks to all those who volunteered or attended! Pictures coming soon...

Backcountry Explorations: NWEEC Summer Backpacking Camp for High School Students

We are planning a series of Summer backpacking trips for local high school students. If you are interested please contact Jenny Konway. More information can be found here! Space is limited!

In-Class Environmental Education: The Council provides wide-ranging environmental education programs at a number of Seattle schools. Lessons and curricula range from biodiversity, sustainability, macroinvertebrates, native and invasive plants, watersheds, and many other subjects. The programs are tailored to the schools' or teachers' needs, and often involve exploring the outdoors and experiential learning. We are currently involved in programs at the New School, Madrona, Orca, Cooper, Concord, Roxhill, Seattle Girls School, Sanislo, Stevens, Arbor Heights, Sacajawea, and others! If you would like more information about our programs, or would like us to come to your school, contact Shannon Luoma at sluoma@nweec.org.

Environmental Portal:  Fostering greater community stewardship and environmental education with the help of more than 120 Portal Members and high school students. Students work to achieve their service-learning hours through volunteering, internships, and culminating projects with the help of the Portal program and our sponsors! The Portal program is attending local Seattle high schools in order to recruit students to help them accomplish their service learning hours!

To search for current service-learning opportunities or find out more about the Portal visit www.portalseattle.org. To contact the Council staff directly about Portal opportunities or the high school fairs, email Jenny Konway at jkonway@nweec.org, or give us a call at (206)-923-1980.

The Earth Project at Cooper Elementary: The Earth Project is a cooperative, grant-funded environmental education program currently being implemented at Cooper Elementary School in West Seattle. In conjunction with the Nature Consortium and Camp Long, The Earth Project includes the construction and integration of a native plant garden, the inclusion of arts and technology in environmental curricula, and the permanent placement of two Council education coordinators on-site.
