NWEEC received a $10,000 Natural Resource Stewardship Network grant from the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks and funds from the USDA Forest Service to plant trees at two Seattle elementary schools: Sanislo and Bailey Gatzert.
Sanislo Wetland Project:
Community, student, parent, and school volunteers have been
working hard at Sanislo
Elementary School to restore the wetland located on school property. With
a total of eleven workparties in 2003, volunteers removed invasive species
that were taking over the wetland, reducing diversity and destroying animal
habitats.

|
First, third, fourth, and fifth graders at Sanislo Elementary School planted over 500 native trees in the wetland buffer area with the help of West Seattle High School Environmental Science Academy students.

West
Seattle High School Environmental Science Academy students have participated
in this project by helping with invasive species removal and creating a planting
plan for the site. They also presented their 3-D site designs to a panel of
experts for review and helped Sanislo students with the actual planting in
December of 2003.
Explorer West Middle School students have also contributed greatly to the success of this project. They visited the habitat on a regular basis to maintain the site and work with Sanislo students in the wetland.
This project has been a huge success so far, but in order to ensure the long term success of the planting, we need volunteers to help maintain the site. If you are interested in getting involved with this project please call (206)762-1976.
Gatzert Schoolyard Habitat Project:
Community, student, and school volunteers have been working
with NWEEC to create a native plant habitat at Bailey
Gatzert Elementary School.
| Stephanie Bryan's fifth grade class learned about native plants and received an urban forestry lesson from Heidi Bohan, a plant expert. Gatzert's three fifth grade classes planted approximately 140 trees and plants in November of 2003. |
The planting went really well and the students were so excited to be involved. Gatzert's students, as well as members of the after-school Earth Club, will continue to work on this habitat and use it as an outdoor classroom. If you are interested in volunteering with this project, please call (206)762-1976.
These projects are made possible through a grant provided by King County and the US Forest Service.
Schoolyard Classroom Project

We are helping students change their schoolyard into outdoor classrooms with native plant habitats and comfortable places to teach and learn. We are overwhelmed by the interest in this program and are seeking donations to help buy native plants. Every $5 buys a native tree or shrub, and 100% of your donation goes toward plants. Every little bit helps. Click the button below to make a secure tax deductible donation. Thank you for your support! |
